Customer Story: Chick Fil-A's Custom POS and Tablet Cooling Solution

Every now and then, an order comes through that makes you stop and take a second look. Not because something’s wrong, but because something doesn’t quite fit.

That’s exactly how our story with Chick-fil-A began.

It All Started with a Question

One of their team members placed an order that included a mix of components that didn’t obviously go together. Rather than guessing what they were trying to accomplish, we picked up the phone.

On the other end was a team working to solve a very real, very practical challenge: they needed a fully mobile, outdoor point-of-sale setup that could:

• Hold a tablet securely
• Integrate a credit card reader
• Display a menu for customers
• Be worn comfortably for extended periods
• Keep a tablet cool in high outdoor temperatures
• Stand up to constant outdoor use 
  

In short—they needed a system that didn’t exist yet.

Designing a Solution Around Real-World Use

Once we understood the goal, our team got to work building a solution from the ground up—one that wasn’t just functional, but field-ready.

We started with a rugged protective case for their high-end tablet, reinforcing it to handle daily wear, weather exposure, and constant movement.

Integrate a method to keep the tablet cool to allow extended use in high temperature not requiring fans, or battery power. 

Next, we integrated a holder for the PAX D190 credit card reader, securely mounting it alongside our signature Handeholder system. To ensure durability without sacrificing flexibility, we used industrial-grade mounting techniques to keep everything firmly in place, even during high-volume service.

Building Flexibility into the Experience

One of the most unique challenges was cooling the tablet.

We engineered a pocket to hold a stainless-steel frozen puck resting against the back of the tablet keeping the tablet cool and easily replaceable when the puck began to warm up. This became an essential component for keeping the tablets functioning in a hot outdoor environment.

Another of the unique challenges was menu visibility.

The team needed a way to present menu options to customers quickly and clearly—without slowing down the ordering process. So, we engineered a custom crane-style arm using an UltraMount system paired with a precision 3D-printed ball joint.

This allowed for smooth, adjustable positioning, making it easy to present the menu at virtually any angle.

We also added a clipboard-style mount, making menu swaps simple and efficient—ideal for changing promotions or updating offerings on the fly.

Designed for Comfort and Mobility

Functionality is only half the equation. When a system is used all day, comfort matters just as much.

To make the setup truly mobile, we incorporated a comfortable shoulder strap with twelve varied attachment points. This allowed team members to carry the entire workstation hands-free when needed, in the most comfortable orientation for the user, reducing fatigue while keeping everything accessible.

The result was a seamless blend of durability, mobility, and usability; built specifically for the fast-paced, outdoor service environment.

The Result: A Custom Mobile Workstation

What started as an unusual order turned into a fully customized mobile POS and cooling solution: one designed around how the team actually works, not just what standard equipment allows.

This wasn’t an off-the-shelf setup. It was a purpose-built tool that helped streamline operations, improve efficiency, and enhance the customer experience.

Why This Story Matters

At its core, this project is a great example of what can happen when you don’t settle for assumptions.

Instead of fulfilling an order as-is, we started a conversation. And that conversation led to a better solution; one that solved real problems in a practical, effective way.
